Abstract :
The transmission properties of the one-dimensional photonic crystal (1DPC) containing indefinite metamaterials are theoretically studied. It is showed that the 1DPCs can possess a similar zero average index (zero-nmacr) gaps, the edges of the zero-nmacr gap are weakly dependent on the incident angle, scale length and the polarization of electromagnetic wave. When an impurity is introduced, a defect mode appears inside the zero-nmacr gap with a very weak dependence on incident angle. A transmitted light pulse in such photonic crystals can experience a positive or negative group delay and hence a subluminal, ultraslow or superluminal propagation with small distortions at different frequency point such as at the lower gap edge, at the defect mode and in the bandgap, respectively.
