Abstract :
Radio link protocols (RLPs) which have been proposed for data transmission over communications links in digital cellular systems are presented. In order to achieve high transmission throughput in the multipath fading environments that these cellular channels encounter, automatic-repeat-request (ARQ)-based schemes are combined with auxiliary error protection techniques, such as forward error correction (FEC) and diversity reception. These schemes are incorporated into radio link protocols which are referred to as ARQ/FEC/DIV protocols. These protocols can be used to provide high quality facsimile signal transmission and async data services in mobile radio environments. The throughput performance of ARQ/FEC/DIV protocols is discussed. The performance of a proposed frequency-hopped multi-frequency-shift-keying (FH-MFSK) system as a function of fading parameters for different communication channels is investigated
