Abstract :
The feasibility of using phased arrays for focused microwave hyperthermia is examined. A prototype system consisting of a semi-elliptic array of six 2.45GHz dipole antennas surrounding a homogeneous cylindrical body with the dielectric properties of the human lungs, and a linear array of five elements parallel to the axis of the body has been used to verify computational simulations of the same configuration. Microwave field intensities measured within the phantom indicate good agreement with theoretical predictions. A computer simulation for a different configuration is presented in order to show the inherent flexibility of the phased array applicator system. The results confirm the possibility of using phased arrays for induced localised hyperthermia for deep-seated tumour destruction provided that temperature monitoring is available.
