Internal recycle ratio (IR) is an important parameter influencing the nitrogen removal efficiency of pre-denitrification system. There are some detects such as poor accuracy and inconvenience for the IR calculation formulas in literature. Based on the nitrogen mass balance of an Anoxic-Oxic (A1/O) system, a novel formula for IR calculation has been deduced. Moreover, an application case has also been used to verify the formula. Results show that accuracy, simplicity and convenience are the advantages of this formula. With the newly-developed formula, it requires only the physical-chemical characteristics of influent and effluent of system to calculate IR.
