Abstract
Speed control of a brushless DC motor has been accomplished using pulse density modulation (PDM) in a soft-switched inverter. The implementation of zero voltage switching and pulse density modulation enables increased switching frequency, which allows more precise inverter control. Also MOS-controlled thyristors (MCTs) are used as the power semiconductor devices in the inverter, taking advantage of the newest technology in semiconductor switching. An experimental system has been constructed in the lab and results are presented illustrating the use of PDM in speed control for a brushless DC motor
