Systematic data management of laboratory equipments using wireless technology

This paper describes and discusses on the development of data management system of laboratory equipments using wireless technology. The system was established to assist staff in managing the loan process of the laboratory equipments using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. The system allows the user to record the data remotely in a more systematic manner for monitoring of loan processes. The collected record data from RFID stored in database and the information displayed on a computer screen where user can monitor the related information of specific laboratory equipment. Studies were conducted on the maximum detection distance between the antenna and the tags, the effect of tag positioning with varying distance. In addition, a study was also carried out on the effect of various types of obstructing materials on the detection distance. Results show that the maximum detection distance is affected by the tag positioning and the material obstructing the antenna and the tag.
