Abstract :
The changes in the optical propagation coefficient induced in optical fibres, when under the influence of microwave radiation, can provide a basis for the measurement or monitoring of microwave power, the interaction being thermal in nature. The following are discussed - measurements on the enhancing effect of applying various secondary coatings to the fibre, modelling of the induced temperature distribution and hence optical response of coated single-mode fibre, operation of a prototype flat-panel health monitor for microwaves.
