Abstract
This paper presents an analysis that demonstrates how symmetrical components can improve protection system performance. A sensitivity analysis showing how phase and symmetrical component currents develop during faults is presented. Application of negative-sequence overcurrent elements for improved protection is described. A source-to-load coordination method is proposed and demonstrated using relay-relay, relay-recloser and recloser-fuse coordination examples
