Abstract
The electrical breakdown phenomena in mixtures of hydrocarbon liquid and carbon tetrachloride have been studied using an image converter camera in conjunction with a photooptical current measuring system. Addition of carbon tetrachloride is shown to assist the development of the negative streamer. The negative streamer in mixtures with 1% carbon tetrachloride is more filamentary than that in plain hydrocarbon liquid and resembles the positive streamer. The results are consistent with the model of a breakdown mechanism based on an Auger-like electron emission process for negative polarity
