            Abstract :
It has been suggested that the radius of curvature of needle point influences the electrical breakdown process. Optical microscope studies of the effect of consecutive breakdowns on the shape of steel needles in dielectric liquids have been performed under carefully controlled conditions to learn more about the influence of the radius of curvature on the breakdown process. It is shown that a considerable loss of metal accompanies each breakdown, which causes changes in the overall shape of the needle point. The size reduction of the needle is attributed to the intense local heating occurring during breakdown and possible chemical effects
