Abstract :
The authors report the initial work of a project designed to investigate the role of particles in initiating the breakdown process in insulating liquids and the value of using the current burst alone to describe the progress of such a breakdown. An experimental system has been assembled to investigate the possible role of particles in triggering electrical breakdown. The system is basically a shadowgraph optical system combined with a system for recording fast current pulses. Examples of shadow pictures triggered by the discharge of a particle at the point cathode together with the associated current pulse are presented
