Abstract :
The author argues that icons are currently overused and inappropriately used to such an extent that they have lost most of their value as a communication tool and exist now mainly as decorative trappings. He further contends that a return to using phrases in addition to or instead of icons would represent a step forward with respect to simplifying complicated user interfaces
