Abstract :
The paper describes the technical evolution of a lightwave layer and a lightwave path based on photonic technology to increase the high capacity, transparency and flexibility of transport networks. The lightwave layer defines the high capacious and transparent lightwave path by wavelengths, and this path can accommodate various kinds of electronic path. The path processing load on the electronics will decrease since large traffic amounts can be handled by the lightwave path within the lightwave layer. A demonstration system of transport networks utilizing lightwave paths is presented in order to evaluate the feasibility of the lightwave layer and the lightwave path
