  • Abstract
Proposes an integrated architecture called (N)-LMP for network management which can be applied for both local and large network environments. Noting that SNMP and CMIP are complementary, the authors propose to integrate these two approaches within a “CMIP-style” architecture. They also reduce the overhead introduced by CMIP which means implementing a complete connection-oriented protocol stack by noting that the right place to implement the network management protocol for large networks is just on top of the “interconnection level” of the environment. The architecture is generic since it can be used on various environments such as OSI, Internet, SMDS, ATM, etc. The authors also investigate how, with their architecture, one can manage “non smart” equipment from a management station which is not directly connected to this equipment
