Abstract
The paper outlines the ISRO´s perspective on effective use of digital technologies through satellite communication for societal applications with a special focus on distance education. The paper discusses the ISRO´s journey from SITE (Satellite Instructional Television Experiment) to Edusat and explains how these experiences have been put into practice by integrating the modern digital technologies, which has helped in transforming the Indian distance education system. The key contributions of Edusat networks were brought out highlighting some important case studies. The various challenges and issues of distance education in Indian context were indicated. In conclusion, the emphasis is laid on the use of satellite-technology for societal development in a developing country like India. A roadmap to address the various issues discussed is also indicated.
