Abstract
Detecting soft failures in a DC/DC converter can allow time to react and make scheduled system repairs before an unexpected hard failure occurs. A soft failure is defined as a failure of a component that degrades a system´s performance but does not completely interrupt operation. A hard failure is a component failure that stops operation. Adding an observer or state estimator to a power supply´s control loop can identify differences in power supply operation caused by a change in one of the main power plant component´s characteristics. A list of the most prevalent types of power supply faults was determined and a switched linear state space model is generated in Simulink to view the ability to detect these faults.
