Abstract
This paper analyzes the effectiveness of a gust tracking strategy, applied to small Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWTs). The control technique has been tested considering different gusty wind conditions, typical of urban environments. In addition, considering the normal a operating profile of VAWTs, the performance of permanent magnet synchronous generators are evaluated during gust tracking. Results from simulations highlight the suitability of the control technique to gust-tracking methods, with particular focus on energy harvesting.
