Abstract :
This paper discusses surface plasmon polariton (SPP) behaviour on nanostructured metal surfaces and films. An overview of both linear and nonlinear optical properties of metallic nanostructures governed by surface plasmon excitations is presented together with the concept of two-dimensional SPP optics. Band-gap effects, surface polariton waveguiding along straight and bent line-defects in SPP crystals, polarisation superprism effects, enhanced optical transmission as well as nonlinear optical switching in surface polaritonic structures have been recently demonstrated.
