Abstract :
The impact of the participation of wind farms in frequency regulation in power system damping is studied. Two schemes to participate in frequency regulation are considered, which are based on inertial response and power reserve. Using a 15-bus test system, a small-signal stability analysis is performed for several loading conditions and synchronous generators (SGs) inertia. The impact of WTGs participating through power reserve is found to be minimal; eigenvalues for practical purposes are the same than when WTGs do not participate in frequency regulation. When WTGs participate in frequency regulation through inertial response, the power system damping is considerably altered and the location of WTGs has an important role. For the considered test system, the largest increase in power system damping is obtained when WTGs are connected closer to the generator with less inertia. These results are promising as they can lead to useful metrics or rules for planning purposes.
