Abstract :
This paper will introduce a low voltage (LV) radial feeder balancing method using Scott transformers. The balancing method converts an unbalanced three-phase voltage into a balanced three-phase voltage and is designed to be used at either a downstream LV feeder location or at a three-phase load supply point. Its impact on LV protection relaying is also analysed. A PSCAD simulation study and a low power physical test are carried out to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method. The results illustrate that it is able to balance the 3Φ voltages in LV networks and maintain the balance by continually compensating for the voltage surges and sags caused by load variations.
