Abstract :
Summary form only given, as follows. We examine models of engineering behavior as articulated by Florman, Kipnis, Unger, and Johnson. What are the relationships between the engineer and the employer, the client, the customer? What should they be? What practicalities come into play? Do engineering societies have a responsibilities in these matters, and if so, what are they? Should they be involved? How? What changes are in the offing as the USA and other nations compete in global markets? These complex matters admit to no ready solution, but we shall explore them interactively and thus try to raise awareness. Engineers need to take more interest in these matters if they are to have at least a shred of control over their careers. It is important to begin now
