Abstract :
A discharge situation, involving an epoxy surface, was produced to investigate degradation associated with discharge interactions. It was realized that when the discharge was energetic enough, the epoxy matrix was vaporized, leaving the load to collapse, thus increasing the density of SiO2. Several microscopy techniques were employed to document and unravelled some nanoscopic aspects related to the present case. It was observed that large SiO2 particles in the micrometric range, embedded close to the bulk surface, showed a greater resistance to partial discharges.
