Abstract
To recognize better how acoustical effects can limit the applicability of ANC (active noise control) to certain problems, two simple noise field models are considered. These idealized simulations are used to estimate upper bounds on active noise reduction performance. The findings are then generalized into a set of design criteria, which are used to discuss how specific applications would be evaluated for feasibility of ANC treatment.<>
