Abstract
The naming mechanism plays an important role in a distributed file system. It is one of the determining factors that affect the availability, scalability, and management work of the distributed system. This paper proposes a new naming mechanism called ´clue tables´. The clue table mechanism offers all the desirable features of high availability and high scalability, and a simple procedure for expanding the file server capacity.<>
