  • Abstract
    Database researchers have viewed prototyping as an effective method of investigating new concepts and techniques. However most well known prototypes have been substantial software development projects that involve several man years of effort. We discuss a relatively inexpensive method of prototyping database structures and concepts using the sound formal system of constructive logic and type theory. The method is illustrated by first describing the database structure of a generic data model, and then defining one of the algebraic operators for it. Specific data models can be derived from this generic model as illustrated by the authors.<>
