Abstract :
To understand grounding and shielding, it is necessary to understand some basic fundamentals about the performance of bonding wires and metal plates. A wire is not just a fixed resistance but is a complex impedance that varies with frequency. Understanding how this complex impedance varies, leads to a better understanding of the grounding principles. Similarly the basics of shielding can be shown by how normal electromagnetic waves interact with an infinite plate. Thus an understanding of the associated simplified formulae will enable designers to make some basic checks. The author discusses wires and braids and grounding guidelines. The author then discusses shielding effectiveness, near and far fields, reflection and absorption losses, and seams and holes
