Abstract
The author defines Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as the planned acquisition of knowledge, experience and skills, and the development of personal qualities necessary for the execution of professional and technical duties throughout an engineer´s working life. It encompasses both technical and non-technical matters. The author discusses the benefits of CPD to the individual including job performance, job protection, and career enhancement. The need to take responsibility for one´s own career is pointed out. Benefits to employers are discussed. The IEE´s own CPD scheme is described
