  • Abstract
The main aim of this paper is to present a new sensing method of vital sign for simultaneously monitoring the pulse rate and the respiratory rate. A new method, which uses a Fiber Bragg Grating sensor to monitor the pulse rate and respiratory rate simultaneously, has been developed and discussed. This sensor is an optical fiber used as a strain sensor. As a result, the pulse wave was caught as a strain with this sensor. And the pulse rate and the respiratory rate were calculated from this wave. The value calculated from the waves showed that it had a correlation with the pulse rate and the respiration rate. A new type of health monitoring vital sign sensor can be used at hospital as well as in other environments, and the method is convenient to use.
