Abstract :
Various types of 3D display technologies have been developed over the past decade. However the problem of how the aspect ratio of 3D display devices should be determined has received limited attention. Displays are often determined by industry and international standards, and do not take the 3D scene properties and depth perception into account. In this work we investigate the problem of computing the optimal aspect ratio (given the total resolution) of a digital display. We show that the aspect ratio of a 3D display needs to be determined by both the parameters of a stereo viewing device and assumptions about the objects in a 3D scene. This work extends our earlier work (Basu, 1992) by considering the field-of-view constraint during stereo imaging.
