Abstract
A new approach to the design of a hyper-ellipsoidal pattern classifier is derived. In comparison with previous works, non-linear mapping and the dimensional problem are avoided. The approach is based on a programming technique and, therefore, it is of low complexity. The design approach is applied to transient security assessment (TSA) in a power system. The performance of the pattern classifier is shown to be satisfactory.<>
