  • Abstract
    Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) are special case of mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). High speed dynamically changing network topology is the main characteristics of vehicular networks. The Internet based vehicular ad hoc network (IVANET) is an emerging technique that combines a wired Internet and vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) for developing a next generation of ubiquitous communication infrastructure and improving universal information and service accessibility. A key design technique in IVANET is to cache frequently accessed data items in the local storage of vehicles. The vehicles have own re-chargeable battery so there is no power problem. The vehicles are not limited by the memory space so cache replacement scheme for accommodating new data items is not an issue. The main concern is to support cache invalidation scheme and also query latency minimization in the context of mobility and communication cost. The critical design problem is how to keep the cache copies valid or to invalidate them when the original data items are updated. In this paper we propose a cache invalidation technique for VANETs that minimizes query latency.
