Abstract :
The start-up phase of Alcator C-MOD has been modeled using an eigenexpansion technique that takes into account the eddy currents induced in conducting structures. The poloidal field (PF) coil voltages that are necessary to meet the field and (open) loop voltage requirements for breaking down and initiating a plasma current are determined. The initial charge of the PF coil, the voltage blip, and the initial few milliseconds of the plasma current rise are modeled. The technique used is briefly described. The specific requirements of start-up for Alcator C-MOD are described, and an example is given
