Abstract :
Modem power systems are being operated nearer to their stability limits, in order to meet the increased demands from a deregulated market. In order to operate close to these limits, fast discriminatory protection is required to detect and react quickly to changes in the power system. Detection of changes in system topology is a strategic function for utilities, which allows them to plan their system defence for severe contingencies such as a loss of corridor situation. This paper describes a new protection device which has been developed in conjunction with Hydro-Quebec, the theory and characteristics of this device and it´s application in a power system environment.
