  • Abstract
In this paper, ANN is used to establish the complicated relationship between the transient behavior of the power system following the clearing of a large disturbance and the operation of the protection relays, especially the distance relays. ANN is a valuable tool for such conditions that an extremely nonlinear relationship between input and output exists. At first the training patterns are prepared based on different operating points and contingencies. The selected ANN is then trained and finally the capability of the network is evaluated, based on the patterns that have not been in the training set.
