Abstract :
Lightning strokes will cause high frequency transients, which may result in an incorrect response by the protective relays operating on the measurement of fault generated high frequency transients. The paper presents a new approach to distinguish lightning strokes from faults using a wavelet-multiresolution signal decomposition technique. Based on the energy distribution features, a criterion is given to discriminate between the two kinds of disturbances. Extensive simulation studies prove the presented approach feasible.
