The changing of the economic structure and landscape is a probable cause for the rise in unemployment. Unemployment is a problematic issue to be dealt with in developing countries. Given the unavailability of a comprehensive and reliable social security system, theoretically there is a very high incentive to stay employed, especially among the poor. Meanwhile, the poor who are not working, and to a certain extent the non-poor who possess low qualification and being unemployed, tend to become discouraged workers. This paper, therefore, explores direct and synthetic estimators which are being used in the analysis of unemployment data. The two estimators were used to study the small area estimation by computing the mean of the unemployed for each small area. The paper also compares the efficiency of each estimator by using bootstrap. The results obtained shows that the synthetic estimator is appropriate for a smaller number of respondents which correspond to our study.
