Abstract :
The paper highlights some important issues of the application of shunt reactors and their influence on the reactor protection scheme. Field recordings from unsynchronized energizing of a 150 MVAr, 400 kV reactor are highlighted and discussed. Even though synchronized energizing is used, the protection must be stable against the phenomenon that occurs when unsynchronized energizing occurs due to an eventual failure in the synchronizing equipment.
