Abstract :
The paper presents the results of a study on the application of thyristor-controlled dynamic resistance braking for damping torsional oscillations in a power system, the IEEE Second Benchmark Model, system-1, which contains series-capacitor compensation. A set of dynamic resistance banks connected to the affected generator bus are proposed and a unified approach based on modal control theory is employed to design a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller in order that all subsynchronous resonance modes in the power system can be stabilized. For clearly demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, both a frequency-domain approach based on eigenvalue analyses and a time-domain approach based on nonlinear model simulations are performed.<>
