Abstract :
This paper presents a study on the application of variable structure control techniques for improving power system dynamic stability. The basic concepts of variable structure control are discussed. The procedure of designing a variable structure controller for the linearized model obtained by linearizing the nonlinear characteristics of a synchronous machine connected to infinite busbar is explained. The possibility of a controller which would guarantee proper operation irrespective of machine output power, transmission line reactance and infinite bus voltage is discussed. The results of the simulation studies show that with the proposed controller, the stability of the synchronous machine is improved significantly.<>
