Abstract
The instantaneous reactive power (p-q) theory is one of the most popularly used method for the control of active power filters. The different compensating components are calculated for different types of compensation using the p-q theory. This paper describes the derivation of the components and their simulated waveforms. The p-q theory is then applied to the shunt active filter for compensating harmonics and the simulation is carried out in MATLAB/SIMULINK.
