Abstract :
In comparison with the traditional way of implementing control and protection functions in an industrial complex the adoption of LAN (local area network) and WAN (wide area network) technologies brings with it key benefits in robustness, access and scalability. This paper relates our experiences in replacing an existing serial communications proprietary protocol based ´n´ substation control system with one designed to use industrial Ethernet and current international standard protocols.
