Business applications of artificial neural networks: an updated review and analysis

Renewed interest in artificial neural networks (ANN) in the last decade (1988-98) has led to numerous applications of ANNs in various fields. The paper provides an updated review of ANN applications from 1988 to 1998, as published in language journals. We classify the literature by year of publication, application area, leading contributors and contributing institutions, and ANN model type. We then investigate the growth pattern of ANNs in various business areas using a flexible growth model. Analysis shows that the top sub-categories of business applications lacked in cross-fertilization of ideas in the past and hence should be the subject of future research
