Abstract :
Discusses the mapping with NOAA AVHRR data of primary rain forest and its degraded forms in the insular part of South-East Asia NOAA data from 1989-1990 were examined in conjunction with high resolution Landsat TM imagery which helped to detail and characterise the component of spatial and spectral information present in the coarse resolution data. After suitable geometric correction and classification, the AVHRR and TM derived results were compared on the basis of 15×15 km contiguous squares. Further, the systematic spectral misclassification within the low resolution data, the subpixel forest fragmentation and the degraded forest effects contributing to an AVHRR pixel were also examined. This study focused mainly on the swamp forest types in the Central Eastern part of Sumatra
