Abstract :
Low voltage simulation tests were performed to investigate the possibility of suppressing very fast transients (VFT) in gas insulated substations (GIS) by ferrite rings. It is shown in the tests that putting ferrite rings around a conductor can change its wave impedance and damp the travelling waves propagating through. This suppression effect depends on the characteristics of the ferrite materials, including high frequency response, magnetic conductivity, loss and saturation
