Abstract
This paper proposes a new method for selecting a set of severe static contingencies in power systems. The proposed method aims at handling (N-k) contingency analysis due to the increase of system uncertainty in competitive and deregulated power markets. However, it is not easy to detect a set of severe contingencies in power systems efficiently because of complicated combinatorial optimization. This paper formulates it as a combinatorial optimization problem and proposes a tabu search (TS) based method to solve it. A comparison is made between the proposed and conventional methods in a sample system
