Abstract :
Concentrated wound permanent magnet machines are designed with two different rotor constructions: either surface-mounted magnets or embedded magnets are sssused in the rotor. Five different types of concentrated wound PM motors with both rotor types are studied. The motors under investigation are 12-slot-8-pole, 12-slot-10-pole, 24-slot-22-pole, 24-slot-20-pole, and 36-slot-30-pole ones. It is in the authors´ interest to find out which of the concentrated wound PM motors would be the best choice for a certain application. The studied motors are designed for a low-speed application with about 45 kW output power. Both analytic and finite element computations are made. Machine characteristics are studied under rated load and the maximum torques of the motors are estimated.
