            Abstract :
Describes an experiment which has been conducted in southern Italy to predict water pollution risk arising from human activity in an environmentally-threatened coastal hydrological basin. This has been carried out by the integrated use of remotely-sensed satellite imagery and ancillary data layers in a geographical information system. Landsat TM and SPOT imagery have been used to generate land use maps which are used as a basis for predicting local net input of pollution. The susceptibility of the water supply to this threat has then been evaluated using a susceptibility model which includes terrain and hydrological information stored as separate GIS data layers
