Abstract :
A general model which makes use of empirical bio-optical relations as well as Mie theory and takes into account the major optically important constituents in the seawater is presented to simulate the polarization discrimination process of the separation of fluorescence and scattering in order to evaluate the efficacy of this technique under various ocean conditions. Using this model, we compare the retrieved chlorophyll fluorescence height obtained by both polarization discrimination and the traditional baseline method with the simulated fluorescence signal for case 1 water for various concentrations of chlorophyll and report overestimation in the baseline method as well as higher accuracy for the polarization discrimination technique
