Abstract :
Product complexity is increasing rapidly to accommodate the growth in engineering requirements within electromagnetics and other disciplines. Simultaneously, industry must reduce the cost and length of design and production cycles as product complexity increases. The need for simulation is increasing dramatically in complexity to accommodate the requirements of systems, designs and products. This is reflected by the significant growth in computational electromagnetics. More powerful HPCN (high performance computing and networking) platforms are utilised, with a move away from batch processing to more highly interactive processing. This results in a growth in the human workload for design, control of systems and specification and control of the simulation and is dependent on the underlying, growing knowledge base. This increased workload must be shared between the human and the computer with the additional effort addressed by HPCN and the human maintaining control of the simulation process, with guided access to the part of the knowledge base that is relevant to the application. For the human to maintain control, more intelligent pre- and post-processing facilities are needed as well as ongoing control of the simulation
