Abstract :
Deuterium-tritium (D-T) operation of the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) machine will require extensive radiation shielding to satisfy biological as well as equipment operating objectives. Shielding design objectives include limiting the radiation dose rate at the site boundary to a prescribed level and limiting the neutron and gamma flux to levels which minimize electrical noise in diagnostic equipment and avoid damage to electrical components. The design and engineering approach taken to provide the shielding necessary to meet these objectives is discussed. The final shielding configuration, which includes the close-fitting machine igloo and the ancillary equipment enclosures, is presented; material types and component dimensions are identified. The design and installation schedule developed to assure the timely and efficient installation of the shielding is discussed
